The Lujia Lab was established in November 2016 based on the School of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering of East China Normal University and the Center for Theoretical and Computational Chemistry of New York University (Shanghai). Its research focuses on
Dynamic molecular mechanism analysis, intelligent ,precise design, industrial application development of functional biomacromolecules such as enzymes and protein materials.
The research team takes enzymes, the "chip" core of synthetic biology and green biomanufacturing, as research objects; analyzes the atomic precision structural basis of biological processes through crystallization (x-ray diffraction) and cryo-electron microscopy; explains the dynamic molecular mechanism of quantum precision through computational methods such as QM and MD; develops an AI-driven intelligent design platform for enzyme molecules and builds a new database of biocatalytic elements; and carries out targeted design and application development for major industrial fields such as chemical industry, biomedicine, light industry and food. The research team is committed to overcoming the scientific difficulties of multi-scale-complex system-dynamic process interweaving and expanding the design boundaries of functional biomacromolecules.

Research Group Qiandao Lake Team Building | Farewell to Graduates with Mountains and Rivers as Accompany

On June 30, 2025, Zhang Lujia's research team went to Qiandao Lake in Hangzhou for a two-day and one-night trip. At the beginning of midsummer, the lake and mountains are lush and green. The research team temporarily left the busy laboratory and regained the tacit understanding and warmth of the scientific research team among the blue waves and forest mist. The activity is also a practice for the graduates of the research team, taking the mountains and rivers as the order and heading for the future together.

East China Normal University's Zhang Lujia research group published innovative research in ACS Catalysis, and the graphic abstract of Aqualigase enzyme was selected as the Supplement Cover Art

The latest research results of Professor Zhang Lujia's research group at East China Normal University were published in the internationally renowned journal "ACS Catalysis", with the title "Aqualigase: A Star Enzyme for One-Step Peptide Bond Dehydration Condensation in a Nature Aqueous Phase". This article showcases the latest breakthroughs of the research group in the field of enzyme catalysis, and their graphic abstract was selected as the cover art of the journal, showing the innovative achievements of the research group in the design and application of catalytic enzymes.

The research group's project was included in the "AI4S Climber Action Plan," and they collaborated with the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory to develop an AI-powered protein design platform.
